Deep in the heart of the West Hobart Bush lies a unique hidden designer retreat.

Slow Beam, an eccentric space which provided the designers and owner with the opportunity to work closely with a range of celebrated Australian designers, makers and  artists, including Ross Gardam. A space that holds a number of notable designs including our iconic Polar Wall Light.

Two modernist box pavilions link together to create a mood-filled interior with views of the Derwent River and rooftops of central Hobart. Built onto existing owners abandoned earthworks, the north side of the house looking onto the rock-face and sloping bush above.

Nestling into to rock faced hills of west Hobart, the house was designed to celebrate Aussie creativity, and actively responds to its bushland context. The Black Stained interior, creates a pensive wistful space designed to draw the eye outward to the carefully selected views framed by large windows. The use of the iconic Polar Wall Light in black agains the black stained plywood walls creates a textured layering and depth. This is a contemplative space full to the brim with Aussie designed pieces which breaks the darkness bringing opulent and joyous colour creating a serious but playful space for guests.

Slow Beam is the bright and brilliant outcome of one seriously talented team – interior architect Sarah Trotter of Hearth Studio with help from architect Murray Barker, photographer Lauren Bamford, the result of which is a dramatic and dazzling getaway for modern design lovers.
